Film Opening Media Theory

For our film opening project, one media theory I have researched and would like to include is Todorov's narrative Theory of Equilibrium. This theory focuses on the three distinctive parts included in every narrative. Todorov believed that stories are linear and all include a clear beginning, middle, and end. His theory explains that stories shift from stability, to disruption, and then finally the issue is resolved and it goes back to stability. An example of this would be in a coming-of-age film where the character personal growth after facing a major challenge (examples include Lady Bird and The Perks Of being A Wallflower).

The Perks of being a Wallflower (2012)

The first part, equilibrium, is the audience being introduced to the characters and the beginning of the story. In our film opening, we show the four main characters who are teenage girls and we illustrate each of their roles/personalities.

The second part, disequilibrium, displays something that disrupts the protagonist's life, along with other actions before the climax. When the protagonist recognizes their life has been disrupted, they will work to repair the situation. This would likely be shown in coming-of-age films which makes a perfect fit for our film opening. This would resonate with the part where 3 of the girls leave the girl who passed out stranded on the beach.

The third and final part of this media theory, new equilibrium, is when the protagonist has resolved the disruption, or not. This part doesn't necessarily relate to ur film because the project is merely a film opening not a full movie. If it was expanded into a full movie. we could definitely display new equilibrium.
